HVAC Engineer – Raleigh North Carolina

SUMMARY: The primary duties for this position will be supporting the contracting and sales teams by performing design of complex mechanical systems for design-build projects. This will include identifying potential opportunities and providing technical support throughout the sales process. This entails assisting with qualification, providing scope support through the design phase, technical assistance needed to close orders and complete project design and development on select projects under contract.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prepares and/or reviews detailed schematic and construction drawings of ductwork, piping and electrical components. Must have a working knowledge of HVAC equipment, controls, piping systems, air distribution systems and fire protection and alarm systems.
  • Perform building heat loss/gain calculations along with other engineering and financial analyses in order to propose and design system solutions. This includes projects as simple as equipment change-outs and as complex as multi-disciplined, design-build construction projects including new ductwork, ventilation, air distribution, and piping systems, as well as building automation, electrical, fire protection and alarm systems.
  • Maintains quality standards by visiting job sites and meeting with customers and other vendors as needed.
  • Visits job sites in order to provide accurate design information for the estimating department to price.
  • Supports all areas of the contracting team and all sales teams by developing solutions, project scope outlines, and sales assistance as needed.
  • Works with building owners and project stakeholders to identify HVAC and process deficiencies and develops solutions to improve those deficiencies.
  • Understands industry changes and responds to alternative strategies to maintain competitive advantages in our marketplace.
  • Responds to customer inquiries, complaints and special requests.
  • Interacts with other business units on warranties, contracts and product issues.
  • Act as an internal and external technical resource for complex and advanced engineering projects.
  • Interacts with the estimating department to develop price competitive solutions.
  • Organizes and catalogs all drawings for future use.

SAFETY:

  • Follows all company safety programs and reports any non-compliance to Director of Engineering
  • Notifies Director of Engineering and/or Safety Manager of any unsafe conditions.
  • Ensures proper PPE equipment is used at all times when necessary.
  • Reports all accidents and injuries to Director of Engineering and Safety Department immediately.
  • Confirms that all monthly safety training topics are completed during the month due.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: BSME or similar engineering degree required; minimum of eight (8) years of engineering experience in the building automation, electrical, and HVAC industry, with field experience strongly preferred. Financial budgeting, planning and administration skills are required.

COMPUTER SKILLS: MS Office, AutoCAD, MS Excel required. Experience with ProCore is desirable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Professional Engineering License (PE) in the state of North Carolina is required, Professional Engineering License in the state of South Carolina is preferred but not required. Valid driver’s license is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret service bulletins, technical procedure manuals, equipment specifications, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, policies, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from top management, customers, and service personnel.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply thermodynamics, heat transfer, engineering economics, and other advanced mathematical concepts to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly required to talk or hear. The associate must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position works in a typical office environment with occasional visits to job sites, which include outdoor work and work in mechanical/equipment rooms. During the job site visits, the associate is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
